Pre-Camp (25 May, Monday)

What sounds interesting about this project?

I think that learning to use the microscope and looking at things as small as electrons are interesting. Also, I would be working with people that I am unfamiliar with so that would be a new challenge for me.

What do you think you can learn from this project?
I think that I can learn how to use an electron microscope and learn more about electrons. I can also learn how to work well with others in unfamiliar environments which would be useful in my future life.

Any immediate questions regarding the project?

  • How does the SEM work?
  • what use does the SEM serve in real life? what do scientists do with it?
  • what exactly are we scanning? what are we scanning with?
First Day (26 May, Tuesday)

What did you do today?
we did the tensile testing of engineering materials activity and the composite material processing activity.

What did you learn today?
we learnt about the concepts of stress and strain on different materials and tried using the universal tensile machine. we also learnt more in depth about composite materials and tried making our own carbon fibre.

How do you feel about today’s activities?
i feel that i now understand more about material science and learnt how to not take materials around us despite it being around us every day

Second Day (27 May, Wednesday)

What did you do today?
today we did the scanning electron microscope activity.

What did you learn today?
we learnt more about the sem and how different it is to the ordinary light microscope. we also learnt how to use the sem and looked at different specimens of insects and zinc oxide.

How do you feel about today’s activities?
i feel that this activity was very interesting and has certainly fuelled my interest for material science.

What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?

  • what new materials have been created and made because of material science?
  • what type of jobs involve material science?
  • what can i do to learn more about material science?
Third Day (28 May, Thursday)

Project Sharing Sessions
Note down at least three key learning points

  • i have learnt how to use a sem
  • i have learnt more about composite materials
  • i have learnt about stress and strain of a material
How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship programme?
i think that this programme has been an enriching one and i hope that future generations would be able to experience the ntu flagship programme as well.
